Supen Chakma Filling The Words With Melodious Tunes

Supen Chakma was born in Gandacherra, Dhalai district of Tripura. He grew up and studied there till his 10th standard. Then, he did a three-year diploma in electricity engineering from Ambassa. And then, he came to Agartala, and did his B.Tech which would have been completed by now but because of the lockdown situation it seems uncertain.

As a kid, he dreamt of becoming an engineer although he didn't have much idea of what is it like to be an engineer and that way he completed his diploma. Also from 8th standard he started learning to sing at school, and he had no plans to make singing as a profession, it was more like a hobby/interest. During his firstyear of diploma, his peers kind of convinced him to start performing.

He has an uncle, who is into singing and in 2014-15 his uncle offered an opportunity to do a recording, and he recorded a song. The song got released but it did not gain much popularity. In 2015, he met another person, who sings and has sung plenty of songs, also that time he did not have a very good status of recording.

However, keeping aside all those things both of them recorded some four-five songs. In the same year, he released an album (Jhuni) and in 2017, he released some more singles. He will be starting a studio of his own very soon. Currently, he joined a class to learn how to make studios, it is not a certificate course as he will be supervised by a known person who has already taken a course on that.

After some basic learning, he plans on taking full-fledged online courses. He wishes to make a good studio for his community people. Some time in his life, he experienced some personal hardships that made him write songs, and slowly he developed an interest for singing. He quotes, 'at times it is very difficult to write songs, but some other times I can write two or three songs in a day, it depends'. Recently, a chakma MV got released named as 'Jogora' (Chakma traditional wine) and he wrote the lyrics of that song.

He collaborates with others musicians/artists as well, sometimes he receives requests while other times he approaches them. He has struggled a lot in his journey as a singer because for making videos or recording songs one needs monetary support but he didn't have enough. So, for that he earns by giving tuition classes, at times he gets help from his peers, and sometimes he utilises his stipend money as well. He plans on singing songs in other languages too.

The thing he enjoys in this profession is when he receives good feedback from people from the release of his songs/videos. He remembers the responses he received after the release of his first song.
